Secrets of AP Racing

Tomorrow's Technology On The Road
Competition is the best of test-beds, and AP Racing's years of intimate associations with motor sport also bring benefits for the latest high performance road cars. The emphasis may be different, qualified by the everyday demands of modern road conditions, but the essential requirements remain the same. AP Racing help to bring extraordinary capability to cars, trucks & SUVs
The Secret of AP Racing’s Formula Road Brakes
The big secret of Our AP Racing’s® brakes is their size! Friction from repeated braking causes heat. If that heat is not dissipated, it will build up and brake fade results, making stopping distances longer and requiring greater pedal pressure to achieve the stop.
Bigger means better
The easiest way to prevent this heat build up is to make the brakes bigger. The extra metal and wider venting fins keep heat build up under control. There is also an added benefit – leverage. Just as it is easier to free off a tight nut by putting a length of pipe on your wrench, so it is easier to stop a disc when the caliper is further away from the center. But original brakes are designed with economics in mind to keep the car within a certain price bracket. Original equipment discs are designed to fit within standard diameter wheels and most standard calipers are pin-slider types, which at best are only 90% efficient. Once you take the decision to fit larger diameter wheels and upgrade to an AP Racing® Brake Kit you free yourself from these constraints.
Larger Wheels
First you will have to fit larger diameter wheels and lower profile tires to make room for Our AP Racing® brakes. Brake Pros can recommend appropriate wheels for your application. We can supply a full size cross sectional drawing of a brake set up for you to test fit inside wheels you intend to purchase, to make sure there is sufficient clearance before you buy. As soon as you fit larger diameter wheels you’ll see that they are crying out for big brakes, if only to visually fill them! You can then go ahead and have your AP Racing® brake kit fitted. You will immediately see how much bigger the AP Racing® disc is. The bigger disc also means that our calipers can be made bigger with four or six pistons (or ‘pots’) for more clamping pressure
Our systems incorporate a larger pad area, and we tailor the piston area to suit each application to ensure it doesn’t upset the pedal pressure and the anti-lock properties of the original brake system. – Each application is designed to take every aspect or your vehicles brake system into account, and that’s where experience counts.
Experience gained as an OE supplier
As mentioned before, AP Racing manufactures performance brakes as original equipment for some of the most exciting sport cars around today. They supply the likes of Renault (Clio V6), Lotus, Rover (MG), TVR, Morgan, Caterham and AC plus many more. If a part is fitted as standard equipment to these production cars it must have been through Type Approval and passed! The brake discs and calipers in our Big Brake kits are built to the same standards as the ones used on these high performance vehicles.
